FAQ

The Answers You Need

Eyelash extensions are an investment in your personal appearance,

when done correctly they can make you look ultra glamorous - even on your laziest makeup days.

Do your research.
Nice lashes aren't cheap and cheap lashes aren't nice.

I've never had lash extensions, what should I expect?

First, please be on time. When you arrive I'll have you fill out a brief intake form. If you're age 16 to 18 you'll need a parent/guardian to sign as well. I'll review this and discuss any concerns or questions you may have. We'll talk about what style of lash application you would like and what would work best with your natural lash health and appearance. Applying lashes can take a long time, especially the initial set. Volume lashes take even longer than Classic lashes since we are working with creating fans in 2D, 3D, 4D, 5D, etc. During the application you're going to be reclined in pretty much the same position for a lengthy period. I take many steps to create an atmosphere that is calm, relaxing and comfortable. Once you're comfortable I'll get everything prepped and clean your eye area and lashes. You'll also receive a complimentary gel pad treatment. I will then work through the application of your eyelash extensions. Many people are so relaxed at this point they take a 'lash nap'. It is recommended to refrain from talking since most of our faces move when we talk and this can disturb the application process, create discomfort or cause it to take longer. Once the application is complete I'll do some final checks and adjustments, ensuring proper lash extensions. I prefer that the application process takes a bit longer if it means the results will look better. Then comes the big reveal! Before you leave we will cover after-care instructions, go over any products you may need to purchase for home use and get your fill scheduled. Please allow enough time for your appointment. Dress for comfort. Silence your cell phone before your eyelash extension session. While the lash extensions are being applied your eyes need to remain closed. You won't be able to get up or open your eyes until the process is complete. A ringing cell phone can be a distraction and trigger the urge to open your eyes unexpectedly. Please don't bring children to your appointment. You won't be able to attend to them, and neither will I. Use this opportunity as a time to relax. Again, be on time. Your appointment is scheduled for the amount of time needed and your time is valuable, as is the time of the person that is scheduled after you. Be respectful of everyones schedule. If you are 15 minutes late or more you may need to reschedule and will be subject to the cancellation policy.

What should I do before my eyelash extension appointment?

Wear no mascara, and have clean lashes using a mild-oil free cleanser. If possible, avoid mascara for 3 days prior. Do not use oil based makeup remover prior to the eyelash application. Avoid wearing eye makeup to your appointment. Have a clean face. Remove mascara, eyeliner and other eye makeup before hand. Although I'll be cleaning your eye area, removing eye makeup can be time consuming and take away from your lash application time. I need an area about 2 inches around your eye to be makeup free. Also, avoid curling your lashes - come with your lashes in their natural state. Plan to set aside 2-3  hours for your initial appointment. If you wear contacts please be prepared to remove them or come wearing your glasses. You may not be able to put your contacts back in until the next day. If you have not removed your eye makeup this will cause additional time to be needed to clean your eyes and an additional charge. Please be considerate of our schedule, and for those clients who have booked after you.

What are eyelash extensions?

Eyelash extensions are individual Synthetic, Mink and/or Silk eyelashes. They are attached to each of your individual natural lashes – not to the skin. This service is beauty enhancing and eliminates the need to wear mascara. It is a meticulous service which requires the skill and precision of your certified lash technician. Once the eyelash extensions are applied, they are natural looking. Size availability ranges from short to long which will be decided and agreed upon with your certified eyelash technician. Other variations in your lash extensions include curl, color and diameter. Length vs Volume is something that will be discussed. If you are looking for a lot of volume (how thick your lashes look) then you'll need to go with a shorter lash style. Think of Volume and Length as being on a sliding scale, volume on one end and length on the other. As you move more towards one or the other, you move away from the other one. Don't worry, we'll talk more about this at your consult.

How long will my eyelash extensions last if I follow the proper care instructions?

I can give you an amazing set of lash extensions, but if you don't take care of them then it will be for nothing. If you're making the investment in your appearance and getting lash extensions, please take care of them! Extensions last as long as six to eight weeks – as the eyelash extension generally lasts until the natural lash falls out in its natural cycle. However, if you wish to maintain them, it is advisable to have fills applied approximately every 2 – 4 weeks (depending on how well you take care of them and your natural lash cycle), as by this stage some would have fallen out as new lashes have grown through. How long your eyelash extensions last depends almost entirely on how you care for them (i.e. by removing makeup correctly, not wearing mascara, not using oily products on your face, and not tugging/pulling at your eyelash extensions). It is important to keep them brushed to keep them looking fabulash!

How much do they cost and how long is the appointment?

The initial cost for the eyelash application is $175.00 to $250.00, depending on the style for a full set, this appointment is 2 to 3 hours. Your maintenance appointment is known as a fill and varies in cost and time based on how long its been since your last appointment as well as your natural lash cycle. Maintenance fills range in price from $35 to $95. See our services page for more information on this. Please do not attempt to remove your lashes yourself; please seek assistance from your eyelash professional. We will not be held liable for any damage that you may cause by trying to remove your eyelash extensions on your own or from failure to follow aftercare instructions.

What should I expect during my appointment?

It is our goal to give you a relaxing and comfortable experience. The lights in the room will be dimmed and a light will be used directly above you to focus on your eyes. You will be laying on a warm table or reclined chair with blankets available for your use. Many people fall asleep during the application of lash extensions, just call it a lash nap. This procedure requires single synthetic eyelashes to be adhered to your own natural eyelashes. It is your responsibility to keep your eyes closed and be still during the entire procedure, until your eyelash technician tells you to open your eyes. Some risks of this procedure may be but are not limited to eye redness, swelling of eyelids and irritation. The fumes from the adhesive may cause your eyes to water if you open your eyes before being told it is safe to do so. If this occurs and your eyes water excessively the procedure may need to be postponed.

Why do I need fills if they last 6-8 weeks?

The eyelash extensions fall out with your natural lash cycle – which is 6-8 weeks, so very gradually – just a few here and there as new baby lashes come through. After 2 or 3 weeks you will start seeing little gaps where the old ones have fallen, and new ones are coming through – so at this point it’s a good time to get fills, so your lashes always look nice and full.

Is having eyelash extensions applied painful?

No. I am often asked ‘are eyelash extensions painful?’ and the answer is no – not if applied properly! The eyelash extensions are applied directly to the eyelash, so there is no contact with the skin. It may feel a little unusual the first time, but once you get used to it, it should be so comfortable that you may drift off to sleep! People with extremely sensitive eyes or sinus problems may get some watering and slight stinging at the end, but this subsides within minutes. You should not feel your extensions in any way. No pain, no poking, no heavy weight.

What about these new 3D Russian Volume lashes that I've heard whispers about?

These are absolutely stunning lashes and at Private Eyes Lash Studio I am certified in Russian Volume and am offering this new technique! Basically it involves applying silk or mink eyelash extensions using a slightly different application method, where 2, 3, 4 or even 5 extremely light-weight extensions are applied in a fanned-out way, to each natural lash, creating intense volume with a soft, fluffy look.

The main benefit of this volume technique is that it has made it possible to give full, voluminous sets of lashes even if you have sparse, fine lashes naturally. Compared to classic extensions, the finish is much softer, fluffier, and multi dimensional. Due to the light weight of the extensions, it has been known to last longer than classic extensions on some clients. Our highly talented lash stylists hand-make all our volume fans during the application (no pre-made fans are used in our treatments) – for better retention and a softer feeling.

Please be careful of unqualified lash stylists using flare/cluster lashes and offering this service as ‘volume lashes’. This has been seen recently – flare lashes are not individual eyelash extensions or ‘volume lashes’ and are not meant to be applied using permanent adhesive. The results are usually disastrous.

Do lash extensions damage my natural lashes?

No. When extensions are applied correctly they will not harm your natural lashes; each lash extension is adhered to one single natural lash, the extension will grow out naturally as your own lash matures. The eyelash adhesive is formulated to create a solid bond, specifically for human lashes. The adhesive dries very soft on the lashes, allowing the lashes to stay flexible and bouncy just like your own lashes. If someone's lashes have been damaged while they had extensions it is due to their own improper care or because they did not seek a properly trained professional that uses quality products. The application products used at Private Eyes can only be purchased by trained professionals.

Do you fill lashes from another studio?

I do, however this is a bit of a tricky question. You may book my "out of network fill" and I will look over your lashes to ensure that they were applied in a healthy manner. This means that they have proper adhesive usage, isolation and healthy lash lengths. This also includes a quick consult to ensure that we are on the same page as to what you want your lashes to look like. It is possible I will recommend removal and a new set. Once you've established yourself with me as a client and are no longer utilizing other lash technicians then you will be booking under my regular fill schedule.
